Lab - 4-19-12 - Soils

Soil

Different kinds of soil can be found in various places on Earth. Each kind had properties making it better for certain uses than others.

We had four types of soil today. Pick one and answer the questions.

1. Write about what soil looks like.......

2. How it feels?

3. How it holds water?

4. What types of soil hold more water?

5. What kind of soil is better for plants that don’t need lots of water?

47 comments:

  1. 1.clay-light brown, humus- dark, sand-brown, gravel- bumpy

    2. soft, grany, grainy, hard

    3. most clay

    4. clay

    5. sand

    ReplyDelete
  2. 1. The clay is a white floury powder.
    2. It is soft and sticks to things.
    3. Clay absorbs a lot of water and holds it in.
    4. Clay holds water best with humus in second. Sand and gravel come last.
    5. Sand because I holds a little bit of water but not all. Gravel is bad because it lets all the water out.

it looked like very tinny pieces of wood of wood, and it looked like it had couple of little leaves broken up.
it feels like there was a coulpe of tinny soft light pebbles.
it holds water when it soaks up the water in the roots.
i think clay can hold up the most water because the clay was soft in the the container that we saw lab in science and when i see clay it is soft and it holds up a lot of water.
i think the sand is because in the dessert the cactuses dont need a lot of water and they use sand.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. The clay soil almost looks like a chalk powder or flour.
    2. Its really soft and powdery.
    3. When moist, it holds in the water really well.
    4. I think the sand and the clay hold the most water.
    5. I think the sand is the best because it holds in water for some plants, but not so much that the plant will die from too much water.
I really like science and I wish we could have science after school every Tuesday and Thursday until the end of the year.

2.It's really soft and smooth but hard to get off your fingers and is super powdery
3.It takes in too much water for plants to grow in
4.no other soil really does except probably loam because silt takes in water and so does clay but sand drains it but those three mixed is really good
