Lab - Soil - 01-20-11

Soil is a very important natural resource. It is made of a mixture of nonliving and once living things.

So, tell me some nonliving things as well as some living things that could be in the soil.

Soil can be classified on their texture which affects a soil's ability to hold water and support plant growth. Which soil do you think holds water the best? Why?

Date: January 20, 2011

Obj: Earth Science

Activity: Describing Soil

Notes: Study Guide – page 57
· Clay – holds water best
· Sand – course texture drains water fast.
· Silt – has a fine texture can hold water & air
· Loam – mixture of silt, sand & clay
· Humus – decaying matter from plants, animal wastes that break down into the soil.
· Soil – is a very important natural resource mixture of once living and non living things.

  1. The best type of soil for plants is Loam. It is the best because it contains silt, sand, clay, and humus.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I think the Loam is the best, because it has silt, clay, sand, and humus

    ReplyDelete
  3. Some non living things that can be in soil is sand, clay, silt, and hummus. Clay holds the water best because so it doesnt let alot of air out and water out.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Some non living things in the soil would be clay, sand, silt, loam, and humus. I think that clay would hold the water best because it lets no air in,and does not let alot of water out.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Non Living-Sand,rocks,clay.
    Living-Worms,frogs,snails.

I think the one that holds the water best is loam. I think this because this type of soil is a mixture of silt, sand, and clay.So it has three different types of soil to hold the water.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think Loam is the best type of soil. The reson I think it is the best because it has silt, sand, clay, and humus. Thank you Mrs.Rollins for the amazing lab.

  7. clay holds the water the best because it packs it in tight.
    -bugs
    -worms
    -compost
    -minerals

I think it would be clay because, It gets very hardened when set for a very long time.I think worms and snails live in other tipes of soil besides clay because, they would get stuck in the clay.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think clay holds water best. The reason I think this is because it is very thick and strong. I love lab and thank you Mrs. Rollins.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think clay holds water best, because it doesn't have as many holes in it for water to get out. Some living things are worms, bugs, and plants. Some nonliving things are humus, and dirt.

Clay, because clay is way more thick than anything else. This soil is also very strong. Other soils are very light so water goes right through it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Living:worms and bugs.Nonliving:broken up rocks and decaying organisms. I think garden soil holds water best because it's MADE for growing plants.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I could be worms broken rocks and plant roots.Next question because it is holds a lot of water and other things.

    ReplyDelete
  14. #1 NONLIVING-wood, dirt, and rocks. LIVING-worms, bugs, hibernating animals and frogs.

#2 I think clay because I read abook and have heard many times that clay holds water best.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think Clay is the soil that holds water best.
I think worms are some alive animals in the soil and they can be dead in the soil.

  16. Hannah S.- CarpenterJanuary 20, 2011 at 2:56 PM

clay, because the tthick texture holds water best because it slips through others easy.

Loam is the best because it has a mix of everything like sand rocks clay.

Living things woad be plants bugs and mineral.
Not living things woad be rocks clay and sand.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Loam because it has clay to hold water and it has a little of EVERYTHING
    ----------

    ReplyDelete
  19. Some non-living things are rocks and shells, some living things are worms and insects. I think clay holds water the best because the particles are very small.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Some living things are that could live in soil are worms, bugs, and plants.

Some non-living things that could be in soil are, decayed plants, fossils, bones, and decaying trees.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. Rocks, shells, and sand are the nonliving things that soil has and worms, animals, and plants are living things that are in soil.

    2. Humus, because it has decayed matter from plants that are very good for the soil.

    ReplyDelete
  22. There could be some earth worms, leaves, larvae, dirt, rocks, clay, worm eggs and other things
Clay, because there are no gaps even if there are, they aren't very big. Water can only get out if there are holes and in clay there aren't many. Take a glass container for example, if you pour water into it the water doesn't come out. That is because of the no holes situation.

  23. Today was so fun and the soil we put in are bucket was filled with seeds, worms and worm eggs. Some non-living orginisms are manuere, plants,Bacteria and some living orginisms are worms

    ReplyDelete
  24. Non-living things
    decayed animals
    rocks
    clay
    sand
    gravel
    Living things
    insects
    worms
    decomposers

I think clay soil holds water the best because it doesn't let the water drain out.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Some living and nonliving things are worms fungi bacteria. I also think that clay is the best water absorber because it is dense and it dosnt let air in. It also will not let much moisture out of it

    ReplyDelete
  26. Non-living things
    : rocks
    : sand
    Living things
    : dead animal debree
    : plant matter
Clay would hold the water the best because I know that clay is used to make WATER vases so it must hold water. Plus sand drains water very fast and clay is sort of the opposite of clay

    ReplyDelete
  27. Worms because they help the soil make energy for plants to grow

The second layer because it is before the rock just like bedrock in the flintstones

    ReplyDelete
  28. nonliving:
.particals of dead plants and animals
    . seeds
    .rocks
    .sand

    Living:
    . worms
    .plants
    .mushroom , fungi
    .decomposers
I think that Loam is the best soil since it has a mixture of everything. Anything one it's own is dull but a mixture has a part of everything and it is the best.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Living things-Plants,worms,bugs
    Nonliving things-rocks,sand,and sticks,animal waste

I think Clay could hold water the best because it's thicker. Silt cold also hold water but clay would hold water best.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Some nonliving things in soil are dead plants and animal remains and animals waste. While there is worms, bugs, and decomposers for living things in the soil.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think clay holds water best. I think this because water cant flow through clay but it can hold it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Some living/non-living things that could be in soil would be ants, termites, worms, snails, grass, fiesies and dead plants/animals.

I think clay holds water best because its grains absorb and expand and stick together>

    ReplyDelete
  33. rocks silt it saise it in the notes

    ReplyDelete
  34. You can probaly find some earth worms and lots of other bugs dead or alive. The soil that holds water the best is the kind that you find in plants cause the water in the soil helps the plant grow.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The living things that can be found in soil are earthworms and grubs. The non living things might be flowers and parts of decaying organisms. Clay holds water the best because its minerals are very close together and are very small which helps soak up more water.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Living: Worms,bugs,and plants.

    Non-living: Weeds,poop,rocks,and bark.

I think that clay holds soil best because it is solid.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Loam because it holds silt which can hold water well. Then also loam because it also has clay and sand which can support it evan more.

    ReplyDelete

I think humus is the best soil for plants because it has a soft chunky texture making it easy for water to soak in. At my table in lab we found lots of twigs, eggs, and dead worms. It was a awesome lab!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Soil has bugs, dead organisms, dirt, worms, and broken pieces of rock.

I think clay holds water the best.

Things that live in soil could be...
Living Things - Worms, snails, toads/frogs, bugs ( too many to name ), plants, and several more.
Nonliving Things - Rocks, decayed living now nonliving things, and more.

I think that the soil that holds water best is clay because clay joins together with other sediments and closes nearly every open area of soil to prevent water from draining away.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Worms, frogs, and other plants can be in soil and also some dead reptiles ,liter, and other animals can be in soil.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Non-living: dead animals, dirt, litter, rocks
Living: frogs, worms, ants, plant roots

I guess it is clay because it says in our notes that "Clay- holds water best".

    2. Clay, because its thick, and it soaks up alot of water, but this soil isn't good for plants. 1.Warms and any other decaying animal in the soil.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think humus soil is the best because it is rich in quality. This soil is the soil you would choose.

    ReplyDelete
  45. there is alot of dead animals and alot of dead plants

    ReplyDelete
  46. Dead animals and plants are two things that could be in soil.
I think clay would hold water best because the grains are VERY small. Small grains are harder for water to run through. That is probubly why most of the time you see clay wet.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think that the humus soil is the best for growing plants

    ReplyDelete
  48. Some nonliving things....
Some nonliving things would be plants that have died and been left there into the ground to decay. Some other things that died in the soil would be anmoils that have turned into fossil fuels over time.
    Some living things ...
Would be bugs such as worms snails and way more.
I think sand clay soil because it absorbs water good.
Thank you so much Mrs. Rollins for that fun class.

  50. Some things you can find in soil are bugs, worms, roots, soil, dirt, cow mummer, clay, and many other things...The soil that holds the water the best is clay and soil mixed togeather(clay becuse it says in your notes)also humas becuse it is a very fine mixture of many things that the soil likes and needs besides sun light.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Some non-living found in soil could be rock and water, and some living things found in soil could be worms, insects, frogs, and such. I think humus holds water the best because it is made up of decayed plants and animals, and holds water the best.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Eggs, plants, dead plants, clay, ants, tree bark, pebbles, shells.

Clay because it is wet and it is sticky so water can not go down.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Non living:air, dirt, grass, clay, sand
    Living: worms, frogs.
This is the most i know.

Some nonliving things that we found were shells, small rocks, soil, and clay. Some living things that we found were ants and plants. I think clay holds water the best. The soil is packed closely together, so it doesn't let water drain easily.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Things that you can find that are living are worms my group found 1 big and fat worm and they found a baby worm.
Some things that can be dead are the plants and animals.
The best soil that holds water would be clay because it is really heavy and hard to work with. I love LAB!!! I WAS SOOO FUN!:)

Clay because if you see the note the note says clay- HOLDS WATER BEST so I choose clay. and clay is made of dirt things, anyway the clay can holds water best then a sand, silt, loam, humus, soil.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Obviously clay because it said it right in our notes.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think humus because it deacaying into it and that helps.

Non-living things in soil might be sand and clay. Living things in soil are worms and insects. I think clay holds water best becuse it absorbs water well.

  61. Soil has rocks, shells and earthworms.

Clay holds water best because it sticks together really good like a bouncy ball.

Today we learned about the types of soil. We got a lot of soil types and looked at them, there was clay, sand, gravel, and hummus. Hummus is a bunch of decomposed plants and animals that were mixed together. So Mrs.Rollins got us a lot of hummus so we could find things in it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think that clay holds water the best because that is what the notes say.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think clay can hold water the best because it is a thick texture and air will not go through it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Bones from dead animals and earthworms could be in the soil. Soil is a good layer that helps plants grow.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think clay holds water the best because it is harder then the rest and it has a nice slippery feel to it.
Some nonliving things that live in soil are, dead plants, dead animals, and dead worms.
Some living things that live in soil are, worms, and plants

    ReplyDelete
  67. Live things are worms, roots, frogs, and fungi.
Dead things are clay, silt, sand, and dead plants and animals.
I think clay holds water the best because it is so tight that water cant go through it easily.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Living Things – worms, bugs, eggs, plants

Nonliving things – soil, dirt, dead worms, dead bugs, clay (which I molded into a cube), humus, sand, silt, loam, water, and I found a pinecone spike!

I think the best soil to plant in is Humus because it has a lot of nutrients from the decayed plants and animals.

Today at the lab we learned about the soil and how its important. Later we diged some dirt and put it in the bucket and we had to find some interesting things in the dirt. So we found some eggs, snails, and seeds and guess what we were the only ones who found a really big egg shell(That's so cool!). It was a great day to learn.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Somethings that are nonliving things in the soil could be rocks that have and have not been broken down into soil. Somethings that are living things are like dead animals and plants decaying into soil.' Don't forget the worms that are alive in the soil.'

I think that clay holds water the best because clay has more of a solid type of soil that is more dense than the other soils.
    I LOVE LAB !!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Jeanette C.- MelanconJanuary 20, 2011 at 8:29 PM

I think clay because,it adsorb more water so it can be made into something.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Clay - Well I think clay holds the water the best cause it has the right material in it . I have learned this by the best lab teacher Mrs.Rollins

    ReplyDelete
  73. For nonliving there is clay, dirt and maybe food. For living, there is plants, ancient animals, grass, worms, bugs, and maybe sometimes rarely frogs that live in there.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The nonliving thing could be dead animals and/or dead plants. It could also be clay, sand, silt, and loam. The living things could be worms, bugs, eggs, or living plants. I think that clay will hold water the best because it is made of very solid/hard earth, and is more dense so it can take in more.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think Clay will hold the most water. But I dont think it is the best soil for plants.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think clay holds water best. because clay doesn't let water drain easily.

    ReplyDelete
  77. 1.Non Living Things: Rocks,Sand,Decaying Animals
    Living Things: Worms,Eggs,Frogs

    2. I think loam is the best type of soil because it contains silt, sand and clay.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Some of the nonliving things that are in the soil are dirt, clay, dead animals, and rock. Some of the living things are worms, plants, frogs, and insects.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Loam because it contains silt which holds water and air, clay that holds water the best ,and sand that drains water.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I found soil rocks

and I think clay can hold the most amount of water because clay is close together

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think that loam is the best type of soil because it contains clay wich holds water in well.It has silt wich holds water and air. Also sand because it drains water really fast.

    ReplyDelete
  82. (1) living insects small reptiles and mammals
Nonliving rocks dead animals and plants clay gravel
(2)clay because it is the densest

    ReplyDelete
  83. Living things can be frogs, worms. Nonliving things can be dead animals, and dead worms and bugs.

I think the best soil to hold water is loam because silt holds water and so does clay. Clay holds water the best.

    ReplyDelete
  84. hanna S. Rollins/beanJanuary 24, 2011 at 2:29 PM

I think loam is good soil Because loam is hold water in well.

    ReplyDelete
  85. non-liveing

    sand
    rock
    clay

    living-

    plant

i thenk the top soil is the most inportint it is going to be the softest in that place so that is whqar all the bugs are

    ReplyDelete
  87. I think loam because it contains silt, clay, sand, and humous.

    ReplyDelete
  88. there is small bugs, worms, and probably other dead or alive animals too. clay would hold the most water because it is hard and compacked

    ReplyDelete
  89. there are frogs and worms, there are also small bugs and moles. I think the best soil to hold water is clay. It can be very heavy.
