Lab - Electromagnet 11-3-11

Electromagnets

Can a nail be turned into a magnet?

What else could you change to affect the number of paper clips your electromagnet picks up?

Could you use something else to make an electromagnet besides a nail?

Name something in your home that uses an electromagnet?

  1. 1. Yes. Only if you have a a good conductor and something to power it with.
    2. I would shorten the length of the copper wire since it is a good conductor. The length will transfer less energy and pick up less paper clips
    3. You can use a washer since it is made from the same material as a nail.
    4. My computer is an example of an electromagnet.

  2. 1. Yes. by an electromagnet and by being a temporary magnet.
    2. Wrap more copper around the nail, or use a stronger dry cell.
    3. A washer, paper clip, and other metals.
    4. A speaker so you can hear the TV.

    1. Yes, if it's wrapped in a coiled or metal wire and hooked to a battery.

    2. To make more paperclips go up I would like get the 2 wires, tie them together, wrap it to the nail, and hook it to the battery.

    3. Yes, practically anything that can conduct heat.

    4. My refrigerator.

    1. A nail can be turned into a magnet by wrapping an electrical wire around it and then turning the power on. The nail will then become magnetised while the wire is wrapped around it.
    2. You can wrap the electrical wire more tightly around the nail. You could also increase the amount of electricity (?).
    3. You can use any strip of metal that will let electricity run through it (Conductor.)
    4. Speakers (?).

  5. 1. It can if you wrap a copper wire around it and attach to a battery like we did in science.
2.You could make the copper wire tighter that has been wrapped around the nail.
    3. You could use a metal rod or a screw.
    4. I dont have anything in my house that uses an electromagnet.

    1. Yes. All you have to do is wrap a coil of copper around the nail and connect the ends to a battery.
    2. You could make the battery larger.
    3. Yes. Any piece of iron would do.
    4. blenders, doorbells, ect...

  14. Yes, because you can make an electrical current run through it and make it a magnet.

You can use gold or silver instead of copper, because they are better conductors.

Yes you can also use a metal air conditioning vent or a metal washer.

In my home I could use a key.

    1. Electromagnets is something that needs electricity to have a magnetic field.
    2. Yes if you connect something that has electricity stored in it to the nail.
    3. you could use a different amount of batteries used.
    4. Yes you could use a paperclip or any thing that a magnet attracts.

  24. A nail can be turned into magnet if a coper wire is wrapped around it connected to a battery. Wrap the wire closer to the nail. you could use a screw instead of a nail. At home a computer uses an electromagnet.

  25. Q:1=When the electricity goes through an object.EX:I connect the wire and battery, and wrap the wire and the nail,it can attract the paper clips.

Q:2=Yes.A paper clip that attracted to an electromagnet, that paper clip can be a magnet too.

Q:3=If a electromagnet makes the other paper clips magnet, then I can put more, and more.

    Q:4=Scissors

  26. Today in science we made electromagnets. My tables electromagnet picked up 42 paperclips.
A nail can be turned into a magnet by attaching it to a magnet. When you do that all of it's domains point to the same direction turning it into a magnet.
If you tighten the object (we used copper)it will effect the electromagnets pull.
Yes you can use anything with iron in it, like a giant paperclip.
An electric toaster uses an electromagnet to pop up the toast.

I really liked making an electromagnet, I wish I could of brought the electromagnet home to show my parents.
